Áncash: bus of the Independencia under-19 volleyball team collides with a hill on the Casma highway

A serious traffic accident left 13 people injured on the night of Friday, January 30, when the bus transporting the Independencia-Huaraz men’s under-19 volleyball team lost its way and hit a hill on the Yaután highway, Casma district.

The impact occurred at 10:50 p.m., when the driver made an evasive maneuver to avoid a head-on collision with another vehicle, which caused the unit to end up crashing into a huge rock on the side of the road.

Passengers attended sports competition

There were 21 people traveling on the bus, including athletes from the volleyball delegation, coaching staff and companions, who were heading to a sports competition when the vehicle accident occurred.

Alerted to the accident, members of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) and Serenazgo personnel quickly arrived at the scene to provide assistance to those affected, while the emergency protocol of the Health sector was activated.

Injured people taken to two hospitals

The 13 injured were emergency evacuated to the San Ignacio de Casma Hospital and the Eleazar Guzmán Barrón Regional Hospital in Nuevo Chimbote, depending on the level of severity of their injuries.

According to the EMED report of the South Pacific Health Network, the patients have injuries of moderate severity, including fractures, intracranial trauma, scalp wounds and multiple contusions. All are in stable condition with favorable evolution.

Among the most seriously injured are five patients who were referred to the Eleazar Guzmán Barrón Regional Hospital to receive more complex care: Marco Mejía Castromonte (52 years old) with a kneecap fracture, Sotelo Collazos (61 years old) with a bone chest fracture, Esperanza Pasión Sánchez (49 years old) and Rosario del Pilar Sánchez Aguilar (40 years old), both with intracranial trauma.

In addition, Flor Margarita Pasión Sánchez (34 years old) remains hospitalized in Casma with a fracture of the tibial shaft.

Six minors among those affected

Among those hospitalized at the Casma medical center are six minors, identified as JJPD (16 years old), MADR (16 years old), CVG (17 years old), ABSS (13 years old), ETMO (13 years old) and ANP (16 years old), who have multiple superficial traumas and wounds to the scalp.

Kiara Noel Huerta (20 years old) also appears on the list, who remains under medical observation with multiple superficial traumas.

The regional director of Health of Áncash, Ricardo Natividad Collas, reported that permanent monitoring of the event is carried out and coordination is carried out directly with the South Pacific Health Network and the hospitals involved to guarantee timely care for all those injured.

The National Police of Peru continues with the investigations to determine the exact circumstances of the accident and establish responsibilities for the mistake of the vehicle that was transporting the Ancashi sports delegation.
