Anato launches alert due to the effect of the rise in the dollar on tourism

The sharp rise in the dollar in recent years, which was more noticeable since August, has affected all sectors, and tourism is one of the most affected. For the National Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (Anato), This situation has become worrying and more so with the record peak that is recorded day by day.

(Maximum trading price of the dollar broke $4,900 this Thursday).

“Although Colombia could currently be more attractive, with a rise in the dollar, this effect may have a counterweight with the increase in the CPI in the country, which for September was 11.4% and that in the case of air transport reached a 30%”, Anato points out in a statement.

Although this hard blow to the economy benefits foreign tourists and has caused positive expectations, it has also raised concerns for the travel industry about what could affect domestic tourism.

“Throughout the year, good results have been presented in the flow of Colombians abroad despite a high dollar. We hope that this will not affect the reservations for the year-end season, both outbound and inbound.”explained Paula Cortés Calle, executive president of Anato.

Currently, the Colombian peso presents an annual devaluation of almost 26%, and competing currencies, such as the Chilean peso, have had one of 19% and the Peruvian sol of 1%; while the Mexican peso and the Brazilian real have had an appreciation of 2% and 4% respectively, so that, for foreigners, when they come to Colombia, they obtain greater purchasing power compared to their main competitors.

(Dollar at $5,000? The outlook for Colombia with the currency at that price).

“It is a good time to exploit the skills of Travel Agencies in the structuring and marketing of attractive tour packages and with conditions that favor the traveler, within the framework of this situation. For this reason, on November 17 and 18 we will hold the Third Receptive Tourism Meeting in Yopal, an event that will provide tools to entrepreneurs in the sector, with a view to designing the portfolio of products and services to promote, in a responsible and sustainable manner, the destinations of Colombia, said the union leader.
