On Saturday morning, Raúl Díaz, the 44-year-old Spanish engineer accused of killing, randomly and dismembering his Paraguayan wife Romina Núñez during the 2019 New Year celebrations, was released.
This situation experienced by a compatriot in the mother country is added to the case of Fernando Báez Sosa, a 19-year-old Argentine boy, the son of Paraguayan parents who was beaten to death in March 2020, when leaving a nightclub in the city of Villa Gesell, located in the province of Buenos Aires.
José Manuel Giménez Piris, a Paraguayan lawyer living in Malaga, Spain, analyzed these facts. He expressed that migration is quite painful since the people who leave Latin America in search of better opportunities are actually economic and social exiles, who must function in a strange environment. Sometimes only with friends and others, even without them, a fact that leads to a series of situations for better or worse.
“In this case we are talking about the loss of human lives of people who left looking for a better future. Now we are pitifully talking about this situation, ”he lamented.
The lawyer affirms that a country that does not invest in education, does not invest in its children, in schools, universities, establishes a breeding ground for these circumstances to occur.
“In Western countries we see the average investment in education, so we know why they are in that situation. The equation is simple, if they invest in health and education, they will see how society grows in a sustained and sustained way, ”he commented.
ANOTHER REALITY
Giménez Piris, who lived in his own flesh, what it means to leave his country to enter a foreign territory, where he did not have protection networks, explains that the reality for foreigners is very different for the worse, than what is believed. In other words, progress thanks to well-paid jobs is not as easy to achieve as those who try the luck of traveling to the mother country believe.
“Taking a trip abroad, to Spain, the United States, Argentina, even if you secure a place, a place, a family that can welcome you is a challenge. You arrive and you find yourself with reality, the family can welcome you for one, two or three months if you are lucky. Then he has to wake up, as they say here, and find a trade. As they say here, he who doesn’t run, flies. Those who run are those who take life lightly and those who fly are those who are aware of reality and are looking for a way to survive”, he explained.
VILLALBA
Mario Villalba, a Paraguayan political scientist who lives in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, explained that migration occurs for various reasons, in his case it was the search for better academic opportunities. But there are compatriots who leave due to the lack of public policies, economic efforts that make many people live in poverty and go abroad with the aim of sending remittances to their families.
“A large part of Paraguay’s income is from remittances. This migration, being stripped of their protection networks, family members, friends, the people you were born with, friends in the public service, in the press, generate many inconveniences for the person who decided to leave their country. If the embassies do not take an active role in protecting Paraguayans who are in different countries, these tragic events will continue to occur ”, he explained.
He recalled that this situation is not only experienced by low-income people but also by better-off compatriots, such as what happened with Rolando Chilavert, former soccer player brother of former national team captain José Luis Chilavert, who was kidnapped in Odessa Ukraine in January 2019 when he went to direct to Inter Odessa, a club from that country.
CHURCHES
Raquel Iglesias, former General Director of the Women’s Observatory and sociologist, explained in turn that our country experienced very critical moments in the economy. Situation that caused thousands of Paraguayans to emigrate to the closest country like Argentina. This, after the sad wars that plagued Paraguay and made us an impoverished country.
“To this is added the dictatorial regime that made many people take refuge in Argentina. Spain was another of the points where Paraguayans emigrated and many women, with their departures, generated dismembered families. All this, in turn, generated another crisis, with many children who were without their mothers, ”she said.
He argued that a person in a migrant situation abroad always has a hard time. Outside the country, she is distinguished by the quality of her work, so the sociologist wonders if she implemented that same desire and professionalism in our country, what would happen?
“I ask myself, if the Paraguayan works so hard abroad, why doesn’t he do it here? We have very noble lands. If they make this enormous effort in the country, I think it would be good for us. They go looking to get ahead and that they end up in this way, it generates a lot of suffering, ”he commented.
Finally, he alluded to the case of Romina, from a gender perspective. He stated that she is surprised that Spain has released a man after such a heinous crime. Since the mother country is very advanced in terms of women’s rights.
“Spain was the first country that had it. Romina’s thing generated a huge impact within Spain itself, Spanish women marched for the case to be clarified. The police found the remains on the beach. Evidence was found implicating him. She spoke with her mother, because she suffered violence from that person, she wanted to return to Paraguay, ”she recalled.
