The activist and member of the Unión Democrática Renovadora (Unamos) Ana Margarita Vijil turns 45 this Sunday, December 18, in the cells of the Directorate of Judicial Assistance in Managua, known as “El Nuevo Chipote”, where she has been subjected to cruel treatment and psychological torture.
«Today Ana Margarita Vijil spends her 45th birthday in jail. Detained for exercising her civil rights, detained for her humanitarian work, detained for defending the rights of others,” said the opposition, communicator and politically persecuted Andrea Margarita del Carmen on social networks.

For its part, the political organization Unamos stressed that its leader is “in resistance, so beloved and luminous”, despite the circumstances to which it has been subjected by the dictatorship. They also demand her freedom.
Ana Margarita Vijil was arrested during the political persecution of the dictatorship against opposition leaders, executed at the gates of the contested presidential elections on November 7, 2021.
On June 13, the sanctioned Police arbitrarily searched the home of former Sandinista guerrilla Dora María Téllez and arrested her along with Ana Margarita. About three hours before the raid, at least two police and motorized patrols surrounded the ex-combatant’s home, while a drone flew over the property. That day, the president of Unamos, Suyen Barahona, was also arrested, and the night before, Tamara Dávila, Vijil’s niece, had been jailed.
According to the complaints from her relatives, the opposition member is being held in an isolation cell under torture imposed by the inmates. On August 31, Ana Margarita was presented before the cameras of the official media where she was observed losing weight due to poor nutrition and back pain.
Despite these circumstances, she was “dignified and haughty,” said Josefina Gurdián, known as “Pinita”, who is the mother of the political prisoner. The 78-year-old opposition member affirms that she continues to demand from the Daniel Ortega regime the immediate and unconditional release of Vijil because “I cannot die without being with her.”
