Ana Belén Montes, who spied for the Cuban government and was released from prison two days ago, asked this Sunday not to focus on her but on “the serious problems facing the Puerto Rican people or the economic embargo from the United States to Cuba.
After spending two decades in prison in the US for sending classified information to Cuban authorities over 17 years while working for the US intelligence service, Montes returned to Puerto Rico this weekend.

“I am more than happy to touch Puerto Rican soil again. After two rather grueling decades and the need to return to earning a living, I would like to dedicate myself to a quiet and private existence, ”he said in a statement.
The former senior analyst at the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and top expert on Cuban military affairs, is the daughter of Puerto Rican parents and had two brothers who worked in the FBI.
Montes, designated as one of the most damaging spies in US history, announced that she will not participate “in media activities.”
“I encourage those who want to focus on me to instead focus on important issues, such as the serious problems facing the Puerto Rican people or the United States economic embargo on Cuba,” he stressed.
“Who in the last 60 years has asked the Cuban people if they want the United States to impose a suffocating embargo that makes them suffer?” he asked.
Montes, 65, also considered that “the urgent need for global cooperation to stop and reverse our destruction of our environment” deserves attention.
“I as a person am irrelevant. I do not matter, while there are serious problems in our world homeland that demand attention and a demonstration of brotherly love, ”she concluded.
Her lawyer, Linda Backiel, indicated that this statement issued at the request of Montes will be “the only public expression authorized by, or on behalf of, her in relation to her release.”
