The representatives of the AN elected in 2015 are committed to “rescuing the institutional framework, the rule of law, the system of freedoms and democracy”, for which they will seek through dialogue a schedule for fair, free and transparent presidential elections
The National Assembly elected in 2015, with an opposition majority, published a statement to express its support for any peaceful alternative that contributes to solving the humanitarian and political crisis that the country is experiencing, for which reason it supports the agreement signed in Mexico with Chavismo, but expresses caution against possible attempts by the government of Nicolás Maduro to use dialogue as a mechanism to stay in power.
The documentsigned by the President of the Committee on Foreign Policy, Sovereignty and Integration, Olivia Lozano, points out that this new attempt must be more functional than the previous ones, which have been used by Chavismo in its favor to shape its political strategies.
“On this occasion, the dialogue process cannot become a new stratagem of the Nicolás Maduro regime to remain in power, avoid sanctions and criminal liability for human rights violations and crimes against humanity,” the letter highlights.
Despite the emphasis that the statement makes on the importance of not ignoring crimes against humanity, hours before its publication the Committee of Relatives of Military Political Prisoners denounced that the victims of human rights violations were not taken into account during this new round of dialogue in Mexico.
“It was very hard to see and hear this (the agreement) without giving a voice to the victims of crimes against humanity. We demand that we be taken into account and that the voice of the victims and their families be heard,” exclaimed Molly de La Sotta, representative of the committee and sister of the military prisoner Luis de la Sotta.

The AN elected in 2015 is committed to “rescuing the institutional framework, the rule of law, the system of freedoms and democracy”, which is why, they argue, they see the need to explore all possible scenarios to mitigate the suffering of the population.
In this sense, they prioritize humanitarian aid and attention to the most vulnerable Venezuelans. For this reason, the agreement consisted in the release of funds, but with the guarantee that they would be directed to social care programs.
“In the complexity of the multifactorial crisis generated by the Nicolás Maduro regime, it is urgent to prioritize aid and humanitarian attention at the level of health and food for the most vulnerable Venezuelans in this first instance of the negotiation process,” the document indicates.
Despite highlighting these needs, they also affirm that the ultimate objective must be the promotion of an electoral calendar that pursues the holding of fair, free and transparent presidential elections.
In order to meet these objectives, they request support from the International Community as a companion to these agreements and watchdogs for compliance with the commitments made by the parties, a request for which they have received a favorable response from the United Nations (UN).
