An earthquake in Afghanistan leaves more than a thousand dead

The number of fatalities after the 5.9 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale in the province of Paktika in Afghanistan has risen to 1,000.

Authorities announced that the earthquake affected Guiyan department and Spirei district in Khost province the most.

The Afghan State News Agency reported that at least 1,000 people were killed and 1,500 injured in the strong earthquake.

Deputy Minister of State for Disaster Management Mavlawi Sharafaddin Muslim said the government will pay USD 1,100 to the families of the victims.

Meanwhile, Pakistan-based Geo News television announced that one person has died in the Lakki Marvat region of Pakistan due to the earthquake in Afghanistan.

Search and rescue efforts continue. Helicopters join the aid.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS), had previously announced as 6.1, the magnitude of the earthquake, and updated it as 5.9.

The epicenter of the quake was claimed to be 46 kilometers southwest of Khost province in eastern Afghanistan, on the border with Pakistan.

The telluric movement, which occurred at 01:24 local time, was felt in neighboring cities with population density and in cities such as Islamabad (Pakistan) and Pashawar.

Meanwhile, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake hit Bender Lengue department in Ormuzgan province in southern Iran. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km at 01:39.

No statement has been presented whether there have been deaths or not.
