Inside the Malleco National Reserve, in the La Araucanía region, an arson attack was recorded this Thursday, which left a cabin, two houses for park rangers and the facilities of four Conaf mansions destroyed. Likewise, it was specified that the incident in question was in the Los Guindos sector and that one of the affected buildings had been declared a national historical monument.
The Los Guindos sector, located inside the aforementioned reserve, was occupied until last week by Mapuche communities. So these communities are demanding the restitution of the land that is in the place. Likewise, Carabineros personnel who completed the eviction of the place during that period, recorded the event without incident.
Specifically, the attack occurred approximately 70 kilometers from the Collipulli commune in the direction of the mountain range.
The regional director of Conaf Araucanía, Julio Figueroa, stated that “we regret the loss of a mansion that was part of Chile’s forestry history (…) In this mansion, many students from different universities in the country did their professional practice in the Malleco National Reserve,” he stated, adding that the park ranger who worked there managed to escape with his family before the attack took place.
The head of the Carabineros Public Order Control southern macrozone, General César Bobadilla, maintained that an unknown group of people came to the scene with firearms, proceeding to intimidate the park ranger and then set the buildings on fire and stated that in the At the site of the event, a canvas would have been found claiming responsibility for the attack by the CAM.
