AN approves celebrating the Venezuelan joropo as a World Heritage Site

The National Assembly unanimously approved the agreement in celebration of the Declaration of the Venezuelan Joropo as Intangible Heritage of Humanity to honor the global recognition that this dance exhibition recently obtained from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The points established by this legal document include:

  1. Celebrate with national joy, throughout the national territory, the declaration of the Venezuelan joropo as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
  2. Recognize the effort and dedication of cultists, musicians, dancers, researchers, communities and cultural promoters who have maintained, enriched and disseminated the joropo tradition throughout history.
  3. Continue promoting the successful permanent plans of the Bolivarian Government for the safeguarding, transmission and promotion of the Venezuelan joropo throughout the national territory.
  4. Publish this agreement in the Official Gazette of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, and give maximum dissemination of it; in accordance with the provisions of article 136 of the Internal Regulations and Debates of the National Assembly.

For his part, deputy Cristóbal Jiménez indicated that “we have 11 successful files; The number 11 is the joropo. Likewise, he recalled that “we started this fight a long time ago, it passed through the National Assembly.” In addition, he noted that during 2014, the president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, declared the joropo as an asset of cultural interest.

Parliamentarian Jiménez, when dictating the considerations of the agreement; established that the UNESCO declaration “constitutes a true recognition of the people of Venezuela and a great achievement of spirituality, national identity and a milestone for our culture that should be celebrated by the people as a whole.”
