The National Assembly (AN) unanimously approved the Draft Agreement on the occasion of the canonization of Mother Carmen Rendiles and Doctor José Gregorio Hernández, in compliance with article 111 of the Internal Regulations and Debates; decision that is incorporated into the national recognition for the sanctification of both Venezuelans before the Catholic Church.
The agreement establishes the official celebration of October 19 as an emblematic date for Venezuelan spirituality, in honor of the proclamation of Rendiles and Hernández as saints. Likewise, it contemplates the promotion of his legacy in areas such as science, education, Christian charity and the values of national unity.
The text exhorts educational, cultural and health institutions to develop activities that disseminate the life, thought and work of the new saints. It also proposes coordination between civil and ecclesiastical authorities to promote spaces of devotion and strengthen the spiritual memory of the country.
During the session, deputy Nicolás Maduro Guerra presented the project, highlighting that “both are the first woman and the first man saints. They represent the triumph of the holiness of the Venezuelan people and are a sign of faith, peace and national unity. That is why this agreement will be published in the Official Gazette and disseminated through institutional channels.”
Likewise, deputy Jesús Brito reported that, after the meeting of the Venezuelan delegation with Pope Leo XIV, the Supreme Pontiff sent a message to the nation. “He urged us to take canonization as an opportunity for reunion and unity among all citizens,” he concluded.
