An accident in Santiago de Cuba leaves 35 injured, including 19 minors

A traffic accident this Wednesday in Santiago de Cuba, the second of this week in the province, left a balance so far of 35 injured, 19 of them minors. As reported by the provincial newspaper Sierra Maestra, the incident took place on the highway of the municipality of Guamá, in the settlement of Aserradero.

The note from the local media describes that “one of four trucks with passengers heading to the town of El Cobre suffered a technical malfunction” and at that time “the driver lost control and, after hitting a power line pole, overturned off the beaten track. “

The text, which was published on the Facebook profile of Sierra Maestra, specified that the wounded received first aid in the Guard Corps of the Aserradero Polyclinic. They also clarify that one of the children “is in a serious condition, while another is in a critical situation.”

The minors who were injured were treated at the Southern Children’s Hospital in Santiago de Cuba and the adults at the Saturnino Lora Provincial Hospital.

On the situation of the injured adults, they detail that two have serious injuries but that the injuries of the others “do not represent a danger to their lives.”

Journalist Benigno Rodriguez Torres, from the Radio Coral Station, specified that at one o’clock in the afternoon they were still without electricity service in the municipality of Guamá. His information also indicates that “five private porter trucks” bound for Santiago de Cuba were involved in the accident, in which parishioners were transported on the way to year-end religious ceremonies.

Rodríguez Torres points out that, according to the account of some witnesses, the passengers “saw their activity interrupted” when the third truck that was in the caravan tried to overtake the second one and when he saw another approaching on the opposite path, “he forced the driver “to make a” sharp cut “and left the road” projecting against an electric pole that serves this coastal and mountainous territory from the national network. “

The last Sunday, one person died in another traffic accident in the same province and left 32 injured. The accident occurred in the morning when a bus from the Retomed Medical Equipment Factory went off the road and overturned on a slope. The deceased was the driver of the vehicle, Víctor Luis López Revilla, 33, who was heading from the provincial capital to the mountain municipality of Tercer Frente.

Last month, Reinaldo Becerra Acosta, secretary general of the National Road Safety Commission, acknowledged to the official press that between January and September from 2021 More than 5,000 traffic accidents occurred in the country, which caused the death of 350 people. He also specified that 51% of the accidents caused at least one victim, and there were about 3,700 injured.

The authorities usually attribute the accidents to the distractions of the drivers, although the state of the roads and the car park on the island are also among the factors that most influence.
