An accident in Holguín leaves five dead, including three Cubans residing in the United States

Havana/A fatal traffic accident occurred early this Sunday in the town of Castillito, in the Holguín municipality of Mayaríleaves five Cubans dead so far, three of them residing in the United States. Among the fatalities is a minor and an injured person in serious condition is also reported.

According to information published on Facebook by pro-government journalist Emilio Rodríguez Pupo, the deceased were identified as Rachel Pelegrín González, 77 years old, and Yaddelis Pérez Osorio, 37, both residents of Las Coloradas, in the municipality of Moa; in addition to Yancarlos Jiménez Carmenate, 12 years old, Daniuska Carmenate Galván, 43, and Adriel Jiménez Pelegrín, 37, residents of the United States.

Rodríguez Pupo indicated that the Ministry of the Interior is investigating the incident, which occurred after one in the morning and involved a rented tourist vehicle that “was traveling from Holguín to Moa with six people.”

A few hours after the accident, the ruling party reported on social networks about another accident in Holguín near the entrance of Dos Bahías, in the Popular Council of Cabonico, where there were only injuries.

In 2024, Cuba registered a total of 7,507 traffic accidents12% less than those reported in 2023 (8,556), according to official statistics offered by the National Road Safety Commission.

The authorities reported that pedestrian collisions remain the third cause of deaths and the most dangerous type of accident. They also described excessive speed as an “extremely dangerous” factor, with every seven accidents leaving one person dead and at least one injured for each of these events.

Since the beginning of 2025, four mass traffic accidents have been recorded in the country. The most recent occurred on January 17 after hitting two buses in Morón and whose death toll – between 7 and 11 – remains a mystery after the official press lowered the figure without giving explanations. In total, due to these incidents, the authorities have recorded 13 deaths and 180 injuries.
