Fernando Bastidas stressed that the relationship with the Netherlands is “strategic” due to the proximity of the ABC islands to Venezuela
The deputy of the National Assembly elected in 2020 Fernando Bastidas reported on Wednesday afternoon November 23 that the legislative body established a friendship group with the Netherlands, considered “strategic” because Venezuela shares the Caribbean façade with the islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao (ABC islands).
Bastidas recalled that the formation of this group had been announced in June by the president of the 2020 National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, and announced that the second vice president of parliament, Vanessa Montero, along with other senior Foreign Ministry officials.
He denounced that relations with the Netherlands were “disrupted” by the “aggression process” against Venezuela. “Fortunately in recent months we have seen doors open, we have seen part of the situation unblock,” he said.

In this regard, he recalled that in recent days Vice President Delcy Rodríguez traveled to The Hague to attend Venezuela’s preliminary objections to the dispute with Guyana over the Essequibo.
For his part, Deputy Saúl Ortega considers that this initiative is a “great triumph” for President Nicolás Maduro and said that his tour of COP27 was “successful”, which in his opinion led to the reopening and “recognition” of the administration in Caracas and exposes “the absurdity” and “stupidity” of having created and supported the “invention of the interim government.”
Ortega added that, once the so-called Lima Group was dissolved, there is no structure that allows sustaining that instance that is promoted by the US.
The administration of Nicolás Maduro and the Government of the Netherlands reviewed on Tuesday, October 18, the border cooperation between the country and the islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao, belonging to that European nation and located in the Caribbean Sea, according to the Ministry of Venezuelan foreigners.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry assured that the diplomats reviewed “bilateral relations and aspects that have to do with the common border,” without offering further details.
This parliamentary friendship group with the Netherlands is known on the same day that the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, announced that the administration of Nicolás Maduro and the Venezuelan opposition, represented under the umbrella of the Democratic Platform, agreed to restart the talks on November 25 and 26. It must be remembered that Amsterdam is one of the guarantors of this process that has been detained for more than a year.
