LA VEGA.-Professor Amparo Custodio (Frente Amplio) was sworn in this Friday as the new mayor of this municipality, despite the claims of the opposition parties, and after the Chapter House annulled the resolution accepting her resignation as vice mayor.
Amparo Custodio, who was a running mate of the resigning Kelvin Cruz, had resigned from the position of vice mayor due to alleged pressure from the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), some of whose leaders understood that it was up to one of them to assume the position because they obtained the majority as a party in the last municipal elections.
The People’s Force, Dominican Liberation (PLD), Dominican Revolutionary and Democratic Option (OD) parties today filed an appeal for protection to prevent Custodio from being sworn in as mayor.
However, the Council of Aldermen of La Vega called its members for this Friday at 11:00 am to swear in its municipal authorities, in addition to Custodio as mayor; Amado Gómez Cáceres, current councilor, as vice mayor; and Octavio Martínez, who is currently a substitute, as councilor.
In the last municipal elections, held in February, Kelvin Cruz He was one of the most voted candidates in the country, obtaining more than 78% of the votes to continue for a third term in the Mayor’s Office of La Vega. However, after being appointed as Minister of Sports in the month of August by President Luis Abinader, he presented his resignation to the mayor’s office.
In the absence of Cruz, as established by law, the vice mayorsto Custodial Protection he had to take office.
