Barreiro street merchants donated speed reducers to improve traffic
The merchants of Miguel Barreiro Street resolved to donate to the Municipality of Cerro Largo several speed reducers, with the objective that they are installed in the area to contribute to the decrease in speed and order the traffic in this busy artery of the city of Melo.
As will be remembered, Mayor Cristian Morel had at the time the possibility of arresting the street, a measure that was subjected to popular consultation through social networks. The majority of the inhabitants of the department were in favor of establishing the unique sense of circulation from this to west, however, the merchants expressed a strong rejection of the initiative, as had already happened during the previous administration of José Yurramendi.
Given this situation, the communal chief decided to maintain the double circulation in the artery, although he announced that adjustments will be implemented to improve fluidity and road safety. Among the measures under study, it is planned to restrict parking on one side of the street, which would allow to expand the circulation space and reduce current problems.
The decision of the merchants to collaborate donating 14 meters of speed reducers was given after a meeting held with the mayor and technicians of the Traffic area of the Intendance, in which neighbors of the area also participated. The measure aims to achieve a more orderly and safe traffic on a street where circulation is usually intense and risky.
“The contribution of merchants is very valuable, because it shows a joint commitment between the private sector, the neighbors and the intention. We are working to find a balance that improves security without affecting the commercial dynamics of the area,” The Mayor Morel pointed out about it.
In this way, the Intendance advances in an integral rethinking of traffic on Miguel Barreiro Street, combining technical decisions with citizen participation and the support of those who work daily in the place.
