Amnesty reminds President Fernández of the human rights problems in Venezuela

Amnesty International calls to investigate crimes against humanity, to prevent them from going unpunished and reinforces the call to Argentina to defend human rights in Venezuela and in the region

The NGO Amnesty International sent a letter to the president of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, in which they claim to be concerned about his statements about Venezuela, in which he pointed out that “many” of the problems in that country “have been dissipating over time.”

“Venezuela has had a difficult time. The High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, took action on the matter, intervened, helped and worked with the Venezuelan government. Many of these problems have been dissipating over time,” said the Argentine president on Monday 18 from the Casa Rosada.

For Mariela Belski, executive director of Amnesty International Argentina, affirming that the problems in Venezuela are diminishing “is a serious diagnosis for human rights.”

“Argentina, in its efforts to support a democratic solution to the crisis in that country, must bear in mind the reality that exists under the government of Nicolás Maduro and, as the authority that presides over the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), has to lead the way for the region,” he says in the letter.

For years, Amnesty International has been documenting and denouncing the crisis and massive human rights violations in Venezuela. Crimes under international law and human rights violations, including politically motivated arbitrary arrests, torture, extrajudicial executions and excessive use of force, have been systematic and widespread and may therefore constitute crimes against humanity.

The complex humanitarian emergency and the lack of access to economic and social rights for the vast majority of the population has caused at least 6 million people to flee Venezuela. Likewise, the policy of repression continues, and there is minimal progress in fighting impunity adequately.

According to the latest data from Acnur (the UN refugee agency), there are more than six million refugees and migrants from Venezuela around the world; more than 950,000 asylum seekers from Venezuela in the world, around 7 million people have different stay permits in the Americas and more than 186,800 recognized refugees from that country.

In 2021, International Amnesty observed an escalation of the government’s repressive policy: human rights defenders and humanitarian workers were subjected to arbitrary politically motivated arrests.

In turn, despite various commitments made, the Venezuelan government has continued to prohibit access to the relevant Special Procedures and the UN Fact-Finding Mission.

Therefore, Amnesty International calls to investigate crimes against humanity, to prevent them from going unpunished and reinforces the call to Argentina to defend human rights in Venezuela and in the region.
