Following the publication, the extraordinary process for 2024-2025 will begin this Monday: the ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), the magistrates of the regional chambers of the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (TEPJF), as well as the members of the Judicial Disciplinary Tribunal will be elected.
In the case of circuit magistrates and district judges, the election will be staggered, so half of the positions corresponding to each judicial circuit will be renewed in the extraordinary election of 2025 and the rest will be held in 2027.
Now, starting tomorrow, the Senate will have up to 30 calendar days to issue the call to integrate the lists of candidates who will participate in this extraordinary election to renew the positions in the Judicial Branch of the Federation.
Reaction to the publication of the Judicial Reform
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador shared a video with the next federal president, Claudia Sheinbaum, where they highlighted that it is a historic day for the country.
They highlighted that the publication of the Judicial Reform takes place in the middle of the presidential transition and the Cry of Independence.
“Today, on this historic day, I signed the decree for the publication in the Official Gazette of the Federation of the constitutional reform to the Judiciary, approved by Congress and by the majority of local legislatures. I was accompanied as a witness by President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. It is an honor to be with Claudia today,” wrote President López Obrador.

Meanwhile, the Mexican Bar Association, Colegio de Abogados AC, criticized the publication of the reform, warning that it was done despite the suspension.
“Unbelievable, but true. Despite the suspension, the Executive published the reform to the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States regarding the Judicial Branch, on a Sunday night,” he said on social media.

The president of the National Electoral Institute (INE), Guadalupe Taddei, said that preparatory work will begin for the election of members of the Judiciary, so, she said, there will be meetings in the Institute’s advisory and technical areas to outline the route.
The INE will be in charge of organizing and developing the electoral process to elect judges, ministers and magistrates; it will also carry out the election counts, publish the results and deliver the certificates of majority to the winning candidates. It will then declare the validity of the election and send its results to the Electoral Court.
Therefore, starting this Monday, the INE will have up to seven days to hold a session in the General Council, which will begin the preparation stage for the 2025 extraordinary election.
