President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that with the electoral reform initiative he sent to the Congress of the Union a few months ago he seeks to facilitate the conditions for the creation of new political parties.

From his perspective, the current rules limit the creation of these political institutions – since the possibility opens up in January every six years after a presidential election – which violates citizens’ freedom of association.

In yesterday’s morning press conference at the National Palace, he also highlighted that in 12 years of history, his party, Morena, is already the first political force, since it not only swept the presidential election, but won 85 percent of the 300 electoral districts and governs 23 of the 32 entities of the country.

López Obrador insisted that the requirements established by law to create a new political institute are complex; therefore, he stressed that his initiative for constitutional reform in electoral matters – which is part of a package of 20 proposals – seeks to eliminate requirements such as temporality and the number of assemblies to be held.

He even recalled that the outgoing legislature rejected the first electoral reform initiative he submitted, in which these changes were proposed to favour the creation of parties.

The President is confident that his proposal will be approved

So in the new initiative he reiterated those postulates and expressed confidence that it will be approved by Congress, which will begin its sessions on September 1.

We were changing that and we will change it if Congress decides so, because it is a limitation on the rights of association. How can it be possible that in January of every six years the only time to request the registration of a new party is January every six years! And in order to have a party, 200 assemblies must also be held.
