Taking into account the similar period for the Peña Nieto government, 3.9 jobs were generated, a figure that falls short of AMLO’s.
With Felipe Calderón, the jobs that were created stood at just over 2 million positions, slightly above those of López Obrador. Who he did surpass was former President Vicente Fox, since he registered the generation of only 979,173.
For López Obrador, the biggest obstacle was the pandemic, as 1.9 million jobs were lost.
In April 2020, a few months after the Covid-19 emergency was declared, the former president promised the creation of 2 million formal jobs in nine months; the figure did arrive, but throughout his six-year term.
Its last year did not help much to increase growth, because it maintained a significant deceleration.
From January to September 2024, the creation of formal jobs was 456,417 positions, a drop of 39.6% compared to the same period in 2023, a reflection that dynamism was lost in the final stretch of his administration.
BBVA’s analysis area expects job creation to regain some strength in part of the last quarter of the year, but with a slowing trend that contrasts with previous years.
With the numbers available, the financial institution’s job creation forecast is the creation of 464,00 positions by 2024.
States and sectors with more and less growth
The states that led the creation of jobs in AMLO’s six-year term were: Nuevo León (290,418), Jalisco (242,757), State of Mexico (228,403), Baja California (142,960) and Querétaro (127,547).
On the other hand, the least fortunate in generating formal positions were: Guerrero (3,591), who in this particular case should not lose sight of the problems of violence and security, as well as the passage of hurricanes Otis and John; They are followed by Morelos (6,960), Zacatecas (7,388), Durango (10,907) and Tamaulipas (13,449).
In the López Obrador government, the sectors that promoted formal employment were commerce, with the generation of 618,373 jobs, followed by processing industries, with 549,110; and transportation and communications, with 414,870.
On the contrary, in the agriculture, livestock, forestry, hunting and fishing sectors, 18,246 formal jobs were lost and the extractive industries only generated 355 positions. In the latter, it is noteworthy that during AMLO’s six-year term there were no new mining concessions.
Regarding the creation of jobs by sex, women were the most benefited, since of the 2 million, 1.3 million were for them and 668,238 for men.
