MIAMI, United States. — The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López, acknowledged this Tuesday that he admires figures of the Cuban Revolution such as Fidel Castro and Che Guevara.
During his usual morning press conference, AMLO assured that he was idealistic, but that he also admired the men who exercised power.
“I am idealistic. And I admire men who wield power. This is the case of Fidel Castro and Che,” AMLO expressed to the applause of a large part of those present at the event.
Immediately afterwards, the Mexican president emphasized the figure of the late dictator Fidel Castro.
“Fidel was the one who led, whether we agree or not, that independence process. Because (Cuba) is an example; It is one of the few countries in the world where they have not allowed foreign intervention,” he said.
AMLO’s words were very well received in Havana, from where Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel sent words of thanks to his Mexican counterpart.
“Thank you dear Andrés Manuel López Obrador, because you never forget in your ‘Mañaneras’ the words that do justice to Our America, its peoples and its heroes,” Díaz-Canel said on Twitter.
It is not the first time that AMLO publicly admits his admiration for the Cuban Revolution and its historic leaders. Like the top brass on the island, the Mexican president has blamed the US embargo of the serious economic problems that have afflicted the Caribbean country.
In this sense, the president described the US sanctions as an “infamy” and a “regressive, medieval and inhumane measure.”
“I think it is an infamy what has been done against Cuba with the blockade of the United States government. It is a retrograde, medieval, inhumane measure, because it is not possible to isolate a country like Cuba or any other country in the world even more, nobody has that right to act like the world government, nobody,” AMLO said on December 3. november.
