AMLO intercedes with Biden to include the Cuban regime in the Summit of the Americas

AMLO, Joe Biden, Cumbre de las Américas

MIAMI, United States. – The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), asked his American counterpart, Joe Biden, to invite all the nations of the continent to the Summit of the Americas, according to what the president himself said in his daily press conference corresponding to this May 2.

“With all due respect, I proposed to President Biden that if there is going to be a Summit of the Americas, all the countries, all the peoples of the Americas, must participate, that no one must exclude anyone. Everyone, everyone, everyone, the policy in America has to change, we can no longer continue to maintain the policy of two centuries ago, ”AMLO detailed about his telephone conversation with Biden.

Last week US Deputy Secretary of State Brian Nichols said to a group of reporters that it was “unlikely” that the Cuban, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan regimes would be invited to the Summit of the Americas.

Following Nichols’ statements to the press, the three Latin American regimes are expected to be snubbed by the White House. The guest list will be published in the coming days by the United States Government.

This Monday, AMLO asked himself: “How is it that we convene the Summit of the Americas but we don’t invite everyone? So where are the uninvited from? From what continent, from what galaxy, from what satellite? In addition, we are going to dialogue, we are going to understand each other, we are going to unite, to brother, that is what we need, not confrontation, ”he said.

According to the Mexican president, Biden “is going to think” about his suggestion. “Hopefully it will be decided to make an open invitation and whoever doesn’t want it can’t go, but nobody excludes anyone,” the Mexican also said.

The IX Summit of the Americas will take place next June in the city of Los Angeles. Regional leaders in attendance will discuss issues related to democracy in the West, various media outlets have reported.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Cuban regime, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, has denounced that the United States tries to exclude Cuba from the IX Summit of the Americas.

In Press conference Offered before official and foreign accredited media on the island, the official assured that Washington had been “making intense efforts and exerting pressure on the countries of the region to try to exclude Cuba from the IX Summit of the Americas.”

“The United States resorts once again to all kinds of resources and lies to assert the right won by Cuba and its people to be present at these Summits on equal terms with the rest of the countries in the region,” said Rodríguez Parrilla.

Despite the fact that Cuba does not appear as an active member of the Organization of American States (OAS), the island’s regime participated in the last two editions of the Summit of the Americas, held in Panama (2015) and Peru (2018).
