AMLO denies Army involvement in Ayotzinapa; parents feel cheated

The president’s statement came hours after the parents of the students at the Isidro Burgos Rural School accused the President of the Republic of “exonerating” the Armed Forces, despite the fact that – they pointed out – it is an “irrefutable truth” that they participated.

“There are numerous testimonies and ministerial statements that support That day the Army was in the streets and participated in a shameful way in the disappearance of our children, that fateful September 26, 2014,” the mothers and fathers say in a letter addressed to President López Obrador.

On July 8, the federal government gave the parents of the 43 students a report on the progress of the investigation almost 10 years after their children disappeared. According to the parents, the report is “confusing” and “full of inconsistencies and disqualifications.”

“We have to tell you that we found it very confusing, full of inconsistencies, various disqualifications that he makes, not only towards our lawyers, but also towards human rights defenders, internationally recognized journalists, UN and United States officials who he says are ‘guilty’ of complicating the Ayotzinapa case in order to, instead, whitewash the Army and omit that of other responsible individuals,” the parents stated.

During his morning press conference, the president announced that he would soon publish the report he gave to the parents of the 43 students.

Next Monday, he and Mexico’s virtual president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, will meet with the parents of the 43 Ayotzinapa students.

Despite the differences surrounding the report, the president explained that the meeting will continue to discuss with the parents, whom he will remind that his government is determined to ensure that there is no impunity in the case.

He commented that during that government, two generals and more than 20 military personnel have been arrested for the disappearance of the 43 young people.

“We will not allow impunity for anyone, for anything, but what we want is to get to the truth and that is what we are going to communicate to the parents. That is what I sent to the parents in a document. Our adversaries did not like it, but we will always speak the truth,” he said.
