AMLO confirms the resignation of Omar Gómez Trejo, prosecutor for the Ayotzinapa case

The prosecutor in charge of the case of the 43 disappeared students from Ayotzinapa in 2014 resigned from the post, the president confirmed on Tuesday, amid a controversy regarding the independence of the prosecution General of the Republic (FGR) and the possible role of the Army in crime.

Earlier, the version of the resignation of Gómez Trejo, appointed in 2019, as prosecutor of the Special Investigation and Litigation Unit for the Ayotzinapa Case (UEILCA). The resignation was confirmed this morning by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The day before, AMLO confirmed that the FGR canceled 21 of the 83 arrest warrants against former public and military officials for their relationship with the case because “they were not in the report” of the truth commission.

Over the weekend, a journalist revealed, through a leak in the file, that the students were murdered, dismembered and their remains scattered in different places, contrary to the version of the previous administration that they had all been burned in a dump.

He also endorsed the version that six of the 43 students were killed by order of an Army colonel who was arrested in mid-September.

López Obrador, who has promised to resolve the case before leaving power in 2024, has stated that the accusations against the Mexican Army they do not stain the image of the military institution, to which he has given leadership in public security tasks and the development of important infrastructure works of his government.
