In 2022, in Mexico there have been 11 homicides of men and women who had an employment relationship with the media: José Luis Gamboa, Margarito Martínez, Lourdes Maldonado, Roberto Toledo, Heber López, Jorge Camero, Armando Linares, Juan Carlos Muñiz, Luis Enrique Ramírez, Yesenia Mollinedo and Sheila García.
However, the federal government points out that of those 11 only nine were journalists.
When questioned by a foreign journalist, the president assured that his government does not stigmatize communicators and that the criticisms he has made only focus on those journalists who “have dedicated themselves to supporting the corrupt regime” or who have acted “in collusion with repressive authorities.”
“It is not how it is spread abroad, it is not what those in the European Parliament thought or what the Head of State of the US government, Chief Blinken, thought, they are wanting to use this against us for political reasons, but we have sufficient moral authority and political authority,” he defended.
According to the Zero Impunity report, 26 suspects have been arrested for the murder of nine journalists, but there is no conviction.
