According to the official communication of the Mexican government, the petition responded to “humanitarian reasons.” In the letter, AMLO reiterated that he was not moved by “another interest” other than “brotherhood with the people of Nicaragua.”
«… our common history and Mexico’s commitment to always open the doors to those who consider it essential for their security and protection, beyond ideologies or political positions. I also express to you that at no time would we lend ourselves to being used in a campaign against Nicaragua and its government, encouraged by interests alien to those of our peoples,” AMLO wrote on December 19, 2022 while Téllez was detained in Nicaraguan prisons. .
Dora María Téllez is part of the 222 political prisoners who were exiled by the Ortega Murillo regime on February 9. Those hostages of conscience were also stripped of their Nicaraguan nationality and the confiscation of their assets through the reform of the Political Constitution of the Republic.
The released politician told Article 66 that she appreciates the statements of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in two senses: for having made a request for her to be released and transferred to Mexico due to health problems and also for his offer to grant asylum to Nicaraguans that they are being persecuted.

AMLO announced this same day that Mexico offers asylum and nationality to Nicaraguans who were exiled by the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo. The decision of the North American country joins the proposals by Spain, Argentina and Chile to grant them the citizenship of those countries.
