During the start of the public hearings of the Presidential Commission for Electoral Reform, the first participants raised several of the points of the call Plan a of reform in this matter, proposed at the time by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and thus promote a new model to choose legislators. In addition, they spoke for the reduction of personnel in the electoral bodies and, even, for the disappearance of the local electoral courts.

There were also those who proposed to apply the Argentine model of primary elections or boost the electronic vote. Local electoral magistrates, deputies and members of Morena, academics and representatives of civil society organizations attended.

The first of the hearings, which was held yesterday afternoon at the headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior (SG), was headed by the president of said commission, Pablo Gómez Álvarez, without the assistance of the head of the agency, Rosa Icela Rodríguez.

Each of the 14 participants were awarded five minutes for exhibition. His presentation was conducted in a desk, in front of the other two members of the commission present.

Andrés Norberto García Repper, who participated in the Legislative Evaluation Committee for the Judicial Election, proposed that the election of councils not be by electoral district, but by state. “I believe more in the 2022 proposal, the famous Plan a That the first filter of the Chamber of Deputies did not pass, because it is talking about state constituencies, districts are disappearing and is distributing the number of legislators that would correspond to each State, ”he explained.

He also stated that voters can choose their preference for the priority of multinominal positions. In this way, he mentioned, all candidates would be forced to campaign.

Norma Angélica Sandoval, magistrate of the Electoral Court in Puebla, asked to increase the resources for the courts to 2027. Moments later, Jaime Miguel Castañeda, MORENA advisor to the INE, stated to eliminate the local electoral courts, since, he said, they are not necessary. “As stated in the evil called Plan a From the reform, local councils must be reduced to a maximum of 45 seats, ”he added.

Enough to the accordions

For his part, José Antonio Piña, an advisor to the Sustainable Mexico Foundation and who appeared as a “middle class aspirationist”, said: “Enough to the accordions.”

Meanwhile, Almendra Ernestina Negrete, local deputy in Sinaloa and secretary of sexual diversity of the National Executive Committee of Morena, requested specific forums for members of the LGBT+community.

During the audience, which lasted an hour and a half, and in the midst of the efforts of some attendees for not falling asleep at the presentations that were barely heard in the speakers of the Revolution Hall, it was also requested to guarantee spaces for the indigenous population in the democratic system.
