The United States Army reported this Wednesday that it will discharge its troops who refuse to comply with the obligation to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

“Unvaccinated soldiers present a risk to the force and jeopardize readiness,” Army Secretary Christine Wormuth said in a statement, according to the AFP news agency.

The document added that the force will initiate “involuntary retirement procedures for soldiers who refuse the order to be vaccinated and are not awaiting a final decision on an exemption request.”

The Army had some 482,000 active troops at the end of 2021 and more than 3,000 could be dischargedaccording to the note.

As of January 26, six high-ranking officers, including two battalion commanders, were dismissed for refusing the Covid-19 vaccine.

The force also issued written “reprimands” to 3,073 troops who failed to comply with the order to get immunized.

Meanwhile, the Navy has already discharged some 40 troops and the Marine Corps, more than 300.

This force was particularly strict because of the risk that a single case of the virus could cause an outbreak that puts serving ships or submarines out of operation.

According to the Pentagon, about 97% of the roughly 1.4 million active-duty US military have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine.
