Santo Domingo.- The Dominican team Los Toros del Este announced on Monday that it will have the return of American pitcher Matt Dermody in the Professional Baseball League championship, which will begin on October 16.

The announcement was made by the Toros’ general manager, Jesús Mejía, who revealed that having Dermody back, who will be with the team from the first day of the tournament, was a priority.

“Bringing him back was one of the first goals we set for ourselves for next season,” said the executive, who highlighted the qualities he possesses as a pitcher.

“Matt Dermody is an ace in any winter rotation. He will be part of a solid core of starters that we will have from the first day of the season,” Mejia said.

Dermody, who will be in his third experience in Dominican winter baseball, last season had a 2-1 record, with a 2.22 ERA in five starts, before an injury ended his participation.

The 24-year-old lefty pitched 24.1 innings in which he allowed just 18 hits, issued seven walks and limited the opposition to a batting average against him of just .207.

Dermody has also pitched in the Major Leagues, where he has worn the uniforms of the Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox.

This year he pitched for the Toros de Tijuana, in the Mexican Baseball League (LMB), where he achieved a record of 9-3, with an effectiveness percentage of 3.03 in 18 starts, in which he went 95 innings, in which he struck out 89 batters, this performance led him to finish second in wins, fifth in effectiveness, sixth in innings pitched and strikeouts and eighth in batting average against, limiting the opposition to an average of .244, in a championship where the collective batting average was .284.

Dermody is the first reinforcement announced by the Toros del Este and will join players such as Iván Castillo, Pedro Fernández, Sandro Fabian, George Valera, Arodys Vizcaíno, Elehuris Montero, Francisco Peña and Jhonkensy Noel who have joined the team in the offseason via trade or free agency.
