The Super Bowl, the final of the American football championship, which took place this Sunday night (8), in the city of Santa Clara (California), became a pro-immigrant multicultural party in favor of Latin American countries and had strong anti-Trump content.
THE match between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots It almost ended up being a detail in the middle of the entire event. The choice of Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny, who is currently very successful around the world, announced a few months ago, displeased President Donald Trump, who expressed his opposition to the artist’s presence at the Super Bowl. Bunny’s presentation was marked by Latin American pride and support for immigrants living in the United States.
But the critical tone towards the current US government’s anti-immigration policy began early. Before the start of the match, the openly anti-Trump band Green Day performed and played some of their biggest hits, including American Idiot. Vocalist Billie Joel Armstrong did not mention the American president by name, as he has done in recent shows, but the punk group’s presence at the event can also be considered a message to Trump.

Bad Bunny
Bad Bunny’s performance, during halftime of the match, was historic, mainly because of the North American government’s anti-immigration policy and the strong role of ICE, the police force that works against illegal immigrants and has committed major abuses and even deaths.
The artist performed a totally political and multi-cultural show, praising all Latin American nations and the importance they have within the USA.
Bunny didn’t directly mention Trump or ICE, but the entire show brought Latino pride to the center of Levi’s Stadium. With all the songs and all his lines in Spanish, the artist was surrounded by a setting that reproduced a sugar cane plantation, which was once a strong crop in Puerto Rico and still is in several others in the region.
Latin cultural elements emerged as Bunny moved through the countryside. The singer Lady Gaga, guest of the night’s star, appeared singing the song Die With a Smile, in English, but in a Latin rhythm version. Ricky Martin, also Puerto Rican, joined the party. He sang the song Lo Que Le Pasó a Hawaii, by Bunny, which has as its theme the predatory colonization practiced by American governments.
Trump’s reaction was almost immediate. On his social network, Truth Social, the president wrote:
“The Super Bowl halftime show is absolutely terrible, one of the worst ever! It makes no sense, is an affront to the Greatness of America, and does not represent our standards of Success, Creativity or Excellence. No one understands a word this guy is saying, and the dancing is disgusting, especially to young children who are watching it all over the United States and the world. This ‘show’ is just a ‘slap in the face’ to our Country, which sets new standards and records every day, including the best stock market in history! There is nothing inspirational about this halftime show mess, which will get rave reviews from the fake news media, because they have no idea what is going on in the REAL WORLD. And by the way, the NFL should immediately replace this kickoff rule.
Near the end of their performance, which lasted 13 minutes, the dancers entered carrying flags from all countries on the continent. Bad Bunny appears holding an American football and says “God Bless, America” and walks with it saying the names of all the countries in the region, from Chile to Canada, passing through Brazil, Guatemala, Puerto Rico and arriving at the United States (and not America).
At the end, Bunny shows the ball to the camera with the phrase “Together we are America” and says, in Spanish, “we are still here”.
