América and Cruz Azul, to the semifinals in Mexico

Americacurrent Mexican soccer champion, became the first semi-finalist of the Apertura tournament on Saturday, after defeating 2-0 as a visitor to Toluca in the definition of the series for the quarterfinals. The ‘Águilas’ of América advanced to the next phase with an aggregate score of 4-0 after their 2-0 victory in the first leg.

In the match played at the Nemesio Diez stadium in Toluca, América took the lead in the 49th minute in a fortuitous play where Marcel Ruiz scored in his own goal by diving to the ground to deflect a cross sent by Uruguayan Brian Rodríguez. América’s second goal was scored by Henry Martín in the 72nd minute when he scored with his left foot in the small area after Brazilian goalkeeper Tiago Volpi rejected a shot from Alejandro Zendejas.

Toluca finished the match with one man less due to the expulsion of Uruguayan defender Federico Pereira, who saw the red card in the 84th minute for slapping Henry Martín in the face. The second semi-finalist is Cruz Azul, who beat Tijuana 3-0.
