The Venezuelan ambassador in Madrid, Gladys Gutiérrez, has already left Spanish territory after being called for consultations on Thursday by the national government, due to the “insolent, interventionist and rude” statements by the country’s Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles.
Gutiérrez, who was accredited in Spain as Venezuela’s plenipotentiary ambassador since May of this year, headed back to the national territory, sources familiar with the trip revealed to Europa Press.
Diplomatic and trade relations between the two countries have become strained in recent days following several interventionist statements by members of the Spanish government against Venezuela, and the attempt by the European nation’s Congress to ignore the will of the Venezuelan people in the presidential elections held on July 28.
On Wednesday, the President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, asked the Foreign Policy Commission of the parliament to present a proposal to the head of the Executive, Nicolás Maduro, to break diplomatic and commercial relations with Spain.
