amazon plan to use the artificial intelligence to speed up the production process of movies and television shows, even though hollywood fears that the use of this tool will reduce jobs and permanently reshape the industry.
In Amazon MGM Studiothe entertainment sector executive Albert Cheng He leads a team tasked with developing new AI tools that he believes will reduce costs and streamline the creative process.
Amazon plans to launch a closed beta program in March, inviting industry partners to test its AI tools. The company expects to have results to share in May.
Cheng described the IA Studio as a “startup” which operates under the “two-pizza team” philosophy of Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezoswhich involves keeping the group small enough to feed two pizzas.
The team is primarily made up of product engineers and scientists, with a smaller creative and business contingent.
Amazon is publicly embracing AI in response to skyrocketing production budgets, which limit the number of shows and movies companies can finance. Technology will speed up certain processes to produce more movies and TV shows more efficiently.
“The cost of creation is so high that it’s really hard to do more and it’s really hard to take big risks,” Cheng said in an interview. “We believe AI can accelerate, but not replace, the innovation and unique aspects that (humans) bring to creating a work.”
The decision to adopt AI comes at a time when actors top level as Emily Blunt have expressed their fear about the rise of artificial intelligence.
Amazon has highlighted that screenwriters, directors, actors and character designers will participate in all phases of production, using AI as a tool to enhance creativity.
Like many other tech companies, Amazon is also pushing nearly all of its divisions to find uses for AI and has pointed to the technology’s successes as one of the reasons it has cut about 30,000 jobs since October, the biggest cut in its history. This included a series of job cuts in Prime Video.
