The Amazon regional communication “categorically” the statements of the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, who said that Peru would have occupied territory of his country in the Santa Rosa area, located on Chinería Island. Through a statement, they stressed that Peru exerts sovereignty over that territory legitimately and continues for more than a century.
They also stressed that there is a peaceful coexistence between the communities of the Regional Government of Amazonas and the Municipality of Leticia, in Colombia. They pointed out that both parties have sustained a cooperation relationship in security, trade and border development issues.
The pronouncement recalled that the Peruvian Congress approved the creation of the Santa Rosa de Loreto district and that the norm was promulgated on July 3. As indicated, this decision responds to an articulated work between the regional government of Loreto and the Amazon Commonwealth in the framework of the National Development Policy in border areas.
Finally, they warned that Petro’s statements “show a ignorance of Amazonian reality” and emphasized that “Santa Rosa has always belonged to Peru.” In addition, they urged President Dina Boluarte and Foreign Minister Elmer Schialer to defend the Peruvian position with respect for international law and current treaties.
