HOLY SUNDAY.—The political leader Carlos Amarante Baret He urged “deep reflection” after the suspension of the Summit of the Americas by the Dominican government.
In a message published on his Twitter account, accompanied by an image of the statement issued by the Dominican Foreign Ministry, Amarante Baret questioned the nature of the event, wondering if it was “an ideological summit, of friendly nations or of countries of the hemisphere” and whether its purpose was “to promote dialogue in the face of conflicts or not.”
According to the leader, the failure of the summit was “foreseeable.”
“US President Donald Trump was not coming to the country, even though the government did not invite, so as not to inconvenience the US, Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela. This exclusive attitude of the Dominican government caused several countries to announce their NON-participation in the summit,” he expressed, after emphasizing that this summit was a failure before it began.
He called for reflection, hoping that the Dominican authorities “understand that we are a sovereign country, as the hero Juan Pablo Duarte proclaimed.”
The Dominican Government announced the postponement of the Décima for next year Summit of the Americaswhich was scheduled to be held in Punta Cana, a decision adopted in the midst of an atmosphere of tension on the continent due to war movements by the United States in the Caribbean region.
The decision was agreed upon with the country’s main partners, including the United States, the original promoter of the forum, as well as with representatives of international organizations such as the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
According to the official statement, all resources invested to date will be maintained and will be used for the organization of the event on its new date, including the hemispheric meetings already planned.
