After a year in captivity in the Judicial Assistance Directorate (DAJ) in Managua, the political prisoner and former vice president of the Superior Council of Private Enterprise (Cosep) Alvaro Vargaswas presented on the morning of this Wednesday, August 31, in the courts of Managua.
The prisoner of conscience was brought before the Ortega judge Ángel Jean Carlos Hernández, of the Managua Criminal Trial District 4, to be notified “that his appeal is being analyzed.”

As happened with the other 19 opponents presented before the judicial authority between Tuesday, August 30 and this morning, the government propaganda media exhibited him in videos and photographs, calling him “terrorists.”
The images of the propagandist Channel 8 show the notorious weight loss of the private businessman and member of the failed negotiating table with the Ortega dictatorship in 2019.
Both Vargas and Michael Healy —ex-presidents of Cosep— were already shown at the Managua Judicial Complex. Of them, little information is known since their confinement. His family has remained secretive about these cases.
Vargas was arrested on October 21, 2021 while at his residence. During a process considered arbitrary, Ortega’s justice sentenced him to nine years in prison for “conspiracy against national integrity.”
To date, the dictatorship, Ortega and Murillo have kept more than 190 political prisoners behind bars, accused of common crimes or alleged “treason against the country.”
