The National Party of Uruguay, led by candidate Álvaro Delgado, expressed concern regarding the upcoming plebiscite on social security promoted by the PIT-CNT. During a recent conference, Delgado warned that there are “25 days to avoid a disaster in Uruguay”, reiterating the position of the right-wing coalition, which is pressuring the Frente Amplio not to distribute the Yes ballot, an aspect that, according to him, could lead to an “avoidable crisis.”
Delgado, speaking as a candidate and as leader of his party, urged both the general population and the opposition not to support the plebiscite. He expressed that the Frente Amplio should not “package” the Yes ballot, insinuating that it was already being distributed among the opposition.
Lacalle Pou positioned himself against the referendum on social security
President Lacalle Pou, from the Executive Tower, also added fuel to the fire of catastrophic warnings, ensuring alleged fiscal consequences that could be taken if the plebiscite prospers. He indicated that it would be necessary to “increase taxes or cut vital benefits,” which would have detrimental effects on personal savings and the retirement system. This increase or cut, the president argued, would be a direct consequence of what is written in the plebiscite proposal.
Lacalle Pou urged the Uruguayan political system to “take a chance”
and to publicly oppose the PIT-CNT proposal, whose key measures include reducing the retirement age from 65 to 60 years, improving minimum pensions so that they reach the national minimum wage and eliminating AFAPs.
