More than 66,500 people applied for asylum for the first time in European Union (EU) countries in the month of July, 49% more than those who did so in the same month in 2021 and only 265 more applicants than those who processed it in last June. The figure represents a “quite small” increase of only 0.4%, reported the European statistical office, Eurostat.
According to the office, the main increases in asylum seekers according to their nationality last July were Syrians (9,010), Afghans (8,150), Venezuelans (3,665), Pakistanis (3,555) and Colombians (3,505).

Eurostat referred to the applications of Ukrainian. In this regard, he indicated that after the peak registered in March of this year, when there was a large increase in asylum seekers (from 2,370 in February when the Russian military aggression began to 12,890 in March), the figures have been going down every month. : 1,510 in April, 1,295 in May, 975 in June and 950 in July.
This gradual decrease, Eurostat explained it because the people who flee from Ukraine benefit from the temporary protection granted to them by the European Union.
The office specified that 21% of all people who applied for asylum in the EU in July did so in Germany, while 16% applied in France and another 16% in Austria, 13% in Spain and 8% in Italy.
Regarding the number of unaccompanied minors who applied for asylum in the EU in July, some 3,400, 60% more than in the same month of 2021 and 17% more than last June; almost half of the total came from Afghanistan, followed by Syria, Somalia and Pakistan.
The three Member States that received the highest number of asylum applications from unaccompanied minors in July 2022 were Austria (1,270), with an increase of 11% compared to June 2022, Germany (485), with an increase of 9 % and the Netherlands (450), with an increase of 70%, reviewed EFE.
