Almost 70% of companies active in the country are MEI, says ministry

Nearly 4 million new businesses were opened in 2021

Almost 70% of companies operating in Brazil are formed by individual microentrepreneurs (MEI), announced today the Special Secretariat for Productivity and Competitiveness of the Ministry of Economy. According to the Mapa de Empresas bulletin, there are 13,489,017 MEIs in the country, out of a total of 19,373,257 active companies.Almost 70% of companies active in the country are MEI, says ministry

According to the director of the National Department of Business Registration and Integration of the Ministry of Economy, André Luiz Santa Cruz, the data show the success of the debureaucratization policies and indicate that the country is no longer hostile to entrepreneurship.

“The fact that there are large numbers of MEIs is a result of the success of the public policy of formalization for those who had informal activity. There are no difficulties in opening companies in Brazil”, declared Santa Cruz. According to him, the individual microentrepreneur represents an important category, which generates formal jobs (each MEI can hire up to one employee) and creates ventures that thrive.

Agility

The director attributed the increase in the participation of micro-entrepreneurs to the policy of improving the business environment. “The more the business environment improves, the more people feel encouraged to undertake. This is the portrait of our time. Brazil is no longer a hostile country to those who want to undertake,” he said.

In the first four months of this year, the time required to open a business was 1 day and 16 hours, which represents a reduction of 1 day and 13 hours compared to the first four months of 2021. According to the Ministry of Economy, this is the shortest interval in the historical series. According to the Special Secretariat for Productivity and Competitiveness, the goal is to reduce the time to less than 1 day by the end of this year. Currently, 61.3% of new companies reach this deadline.
