MIAMI, United States. – In 2022 some 5,961 Cuban migrants crossed the Darién jungle ―the natural border between Panama and Colombia―, according to data published by the Panamanian government.

Last year the flow between Panama and Colombia through the Darien jungle, one of the most dangerous natural areas in Latin America, grew by 85.6% compared to the previous year, the Panamanian government specified.

The historical number of migrants (248,284) was led by Venezuelans (150,327), Ecuadorians (29,356) and Haitians (22,435). Cubans were in fourth place, followed by Colombians (5,064), according to the National Migration Service (SNM) of Panama.

According to the sources cited, migrants from more than 35 countries around the world pass through the Darien jungle, including Asians and Africans.

The flow of Cubans through the Darién jungle decreased in the last year due to the visa exemption applied by the Daniel Ortega regime to the island’s nationals, which shortened the journey of Cuban migrants to the southern border of USA.

Just a week ago, the migratory panorama of Cubans changed again when the United States Government announced that it would restrict the entry of Cubans, Haitians and Nicaraguans who tried to enter illegally through the border with Mexico.

The White House highlighted in a statement that the measure seeks to stop the migratory wave that the country is facing, but, in turn, create a new “orderly, safe and humane” procedure that “substantially” reduces the number of people trying to access US territory illegally.

Recently, the Secretary of Homeland Security of the United States, Alejandro Mayorkas, asked migrants from the region not to throw themselves into the sea or put their lives in the hands of smugglers, shortly after the United States Government announced the new migration program for Cubans, Haitians and

“It is extraordinarily important that we provide a safe, humane and orderly way for people to get to the United States without having to put their lives and life savings in the hands of smugglers, because it is just too traumatic,” Mayorkas said.
