Almost 50% of the potato crops in Marcavalle have been lost due to drought and frost

One of the most affected population centers is Marcavalle, in the district of Pucará, province of Huancayo. The authorities report that their crops, potatoes, were planted three months ago, however, due to lack of water, they do not grow and more than 50% was lost with the last frosts that fell.

“Those we have planted in the month of September, which is a large planting. We should already be growing the products, but as can be seen, the crops are not growing and, at the rate we are going, there will be no production for the next harvest,” said the mayor of the town of Marcavalle, Flor María Cenzano Tapia.

Only in Marcavalle, there are more than 200 native potato producers, on average each farmer sows between 7 and 10 hectares, however, due to lack of rain, some preferred to wait and in other cases more than half of their crops were lost.

Other affected crops in the valley are corn, broad beans, peas, wheat, barley and others. Senamhi. The National Meteorology and Hydrology Service of Peru (SENAMHI) reported that until tomorrow, December 5, cloudy skies will be recorded in the Andean region and rains in the Central Jungle. While for December 06 and 07 they predicted moderate rains in the Andean region, with gusts of wind.
