Almost 35% of Venezuelans who have emigrated are in Colombia

This was the regulation to cross the border between Colombia and Venezuela

A recent report from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (Acnur) and the International Office for Migration (IOM) reports that, until November, 34.72% of Venezuelan migrants were in Colombia

One of the most serious migratory crises that exist on the planet is the Venezuelan one. A recent report from United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and of the International Office for Migration (IOM) reports that Until the month of November there were exactly 7,134,132 Venezuelan migrants scattered in various countries, of which 34.72% were in Colombiawhich is equivalent to saying that 2,476,970 Venezuelans have crossed the border to reach the neighboring country.

Of this universe, according to Colombian Migration records, 2,417,437 people completed the prerequisite of the Single Registry of Venezuelan Migrants (RUMV). And of these, 2,351,351 finished filling out the characterization survey applied by the Colombian government for months, an instrument that the current government of Gustavo Petro.

According to these migratory data, the Temporary Protection Permit (PPT) was fully approved for 1,632,817 migrants, which results in the incorporation of these citizens to the enjoyment of some benefits granted by the Colombian State.

In this sense, more than 900,000 migrants were incorporated into the general public health system and 573,846 Venezuelan students were included in the Colombian Basic and Secondary Education Student Enrollment System (Simat).

Beyond numbers and data

But beyond these numbers, Venezuelan migration in Colombia still faces several difficulties that prevent its full establishment by virtue of the right that every person has, not only to migrate for compelling reasons or by choice, but also to establish a society that offers you full guarantees of personal and professional development.

Among those challenges that international organizations and the Colombian State face to welcome and incorporate the Venezuelan migrant population, and of other nationalities, which continues to see Colombia as one of the countries with the greatest potential for rooting and quality of life, is recognizing these people as a population in need of international protection.

On the other hand, the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) has proposed the statutory regulation of protection figures to avoid the use of discretionary discourse as a tool that violates the Human Rights of migrants.

In particular, the Colombian government received a demand from organizations and civil society to watch over more than 4,000 boys and girls from Venezuela under the guardianship of the Colombian Institute for Family Welfare who were born before 2019 and cannot benefit from the ‘Primero la la Childhood’.

Venezuelans in Colombia, even in a legal situation, continue to be subjected to discriminatory and xenophobic treatment in different areas such as work, education and social. A huge challenge to change this reality for the management of Gustavo Petro and other international institutions.

In fact, it recently received a proposal from UNHCR to include the socioeconomic integration of migrants and refugees with a budget in the National Development Plan.

Another of the demands, for Colombia and Panama, is to guarantee safe and short transit conditions in the Darién Gap.
