MIAMI, United States. – The Attorney General of the Republic of Cuba (FGR) reported this Monday that the Island’s courts had sentenced 381 people for the historic demonstrations of July 11 and 12, 2021 (J11).
According to the note published by that institution of the Cuban regime, 78% of those sanctioned (297) received sentences of up to 25 years in prison. In the list of those condemned, young people between 16 and 18 years old stand out.
“While the Supreme Court of Cuba has not yet published the sentences of the cassation trials, the majority of the demonstrators of [los barrios habaneros de] The Güinera and Toyo, accused of sedition, today the Cuban Attorney General’s Office reports sanctions on “381 people, including 16 young people between the ages of 16 and 18,” denounced on Twitter the activist Salomé García Bacallao.
According to the records of the Justice 11J group and the Cubalex Legal Information Center, cited by García Bacallao herself, so far at least 585 people have been tried in relation to the 11J protests, including 24 minors and “at least 89 more people are awaiting trial with a prosecutor request, including five minors under 18 years of age, “said the activist.
Most of the crimes for which the 381 people convicted so far were accused, according to the FGR, are sedition, sabotage, robbery with force and violence, attack, contempt and public disorder.
“The FGR has not yet responded to the total number of people detained for the 11J protests and the following days. In January, it reported that 790 people had been prosecuted. We demand that the Supreme Court review all cases and immediate release without charge for [email protected]!” Garcia Bacallao wrote.
In the official note released this Monday, the FGR assures that 84 people were subsidized for deprivation of liberty by other types of sanctions such as correctional work with and without internment, and limitation of liberty.
The figures released this Monday by official media do not coincide with those published by different NGOs since 11J.
According to Prisoners Defenders, as of May this year, at least 1,046 people were in prison for political reasons, mostly for the 9/11 protests.
