Almost 200 homicides leave the war between “Chapitos” and “Mayos” in Sinaloa

Almost 200 homicides leave the war between “Chapitos” and “Mayos” in Sinaloa

The report is released hours after federal and state forces met to talk about the strategy to follow to stop homicides in Sinaloa.

“People live in fear, schools are without students, young people are disappeared, the streets are left alone at night,” said Calderón Quevedo.

The violence unleashed by the fight between the sons of Joaquín Guzmán Loera and Ismael Zambada García has caused the closure of dozens of businesses located in Culiacán and Mazatlán, the main cities of the state.

The report also warned about the drop in tourism in the region, which has also caused the loss of jobs.

The new president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, promised on Tuesday to reduce intentional homicides in the country, launching her long-awaited security strategy, which focuses on reinforcing the National Guard and increasing crime prevention and investigation efforts to combat to criminal groups.

The presentation of the plan comes as Mexico recovers from the brutal murder of the mayor of Chilpancingo, the capital of the violent Guerrero state, who was murdered just six days after taking office, and amid an increase in violence in Sinaloa , historic cradle of drug trafficking bosses.

“What are we going to use? Prevention, attention to the causes and intelligence, and presence,” Sheinbaum said at a press conference, when presenting the strategy, whose challenge is to reduce the 200,000 intentional homicides recorded in the almost six years of managing his predecessor and political ally, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The president, who has been in office for a week, defended the way in which the authorities are addressing the violence crisis in Guerrero and Sinaloa. “There is a strategy, it is not only a reaction, but there is a strategy that allows us to reduce intentional homicides,” he stated.

Together with Sheinbaum, the Secretary of Security, Omar García, detailed the four axes of the plan. The first – he detailed – is to continue López Obrador’s policy of promoting poverty reduction programs to prevent lower-income citizens from joining the ranks of criminal groups.

The former president was criticized for his “hugs, not bullets” strategy that, according to opponents, allowed criminal groups to expand and strengthen.

The second axis is to strengthen the operational capabilities of the National Guard, which has more than 133,000 members and is under the control of the Ministry of Defense, thanks to legal reforms promoted by the ruling party that opponents consider a mechanism to militarize the country.

Thirdly, the plan plans to give greater weight to intelligence and research, through the creation of an undersecretariat specialized in that area and the incorporation of analysts, field researchers and technical specialists.

The last axis is the coordination between authorities and public institutions at the federal level and with the states, added the secretary, who announced that he and members of his team will travel to Sinaloa in the next few hours to address the recent outbreak of violence in the area. .

The state in the northwest of the country, but especially its capital Culiacán and the surrounding area, have been experiencing a deadly armed conflict for weeks between groups that are fighting for control of the territory after the arrest in July in the United States of the legendary leader of the Sinaloa Cartel Ismael. “El Mayo” Zambada.

Sheinbaum said Tuesday that his foreign minister will meet with the U.S. ambassador and hopes to get more information about Zambada’s arrest along with a son of another historic cartel leader, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, in a major coup that infuriated authorities. Mexicans because they were not given prior notice.

The United States government has denied that it was directly involved in the capture, preceded by a clandestine trip of the two drug traffickers in a small plane from Mexico to Texas, and that it only arrested the couple when they arrived in its territory.
