Almagro blames the regime for the consequences of the occupation of the OAS offices in Nicaragua

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Louis Almagrodenounced the “illegitimate occupation” of the agency’s offices in Managua, Nicaragua, by officials of the regime of Daniel Ortegaexecuted this Sunday, April 24.

In a statement issued hours after Ortega’s onslaught, the General Secretariat denounced that “today the Nicaraguan authorities have illegally occupied the offices of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Managua,” which constitutes a “violation of the most elementary international standards.

“Your offices, files and documents enjoy the most absolute inviolability. Her rape by the Nicaraguan authorities makes them internationally responsible for its consequences», warned Almagro.

The seizure of the facilities occurred minutes after the The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will announce the early departure of Ortega from the regional forumConsequently, the regime withdrew the credentials of its representatives to the OAS and ordered the organization’s headquarters in the country to be closed.

Almagro reminded Ortega that, although his regime has denounced the OAS Charter—in November 2021—, the official withdrawal will only take effect at the end of 2023, under the condition that, by then, “it has complied with all the obligations that the Inter-American System imposes on all its members, in the respect and fulfillment of its ends and purposes.”

“Until then, Nicaragua is a full member of the Organization and must comply with all its commitments” by reason of Article 33 of the OAS Charter.

“We demand that the Nicaraguan government respect the obligations that today govern its relationship with the OAS and with every international organization of which Nicaragua is a part,” Almagro emphasized.

Ortega’s early withdrawal from the OAS comes amid diplomatic moves within his administration, and a month after the former ambassador Arturo McFields will distance himself from the dictatorship and decided, surprisingly, to publicly denounce human rights violations in Nicaragua.
