The turnover generated by Uruguayan exports of dairy products during January 2022 increased 12%compared to that achieved in January 2021.
The report prepared by the technicians of the National Milk Institute (Inale) revealed higher billings in the categories of whole milk powder and butter and less for cheese and skim milk powder.
Despite these differences, better prices were achieved for all the mentioned products.
Considering the set of four items in January 2022 it was exported for US$ 66.2 millionbased on data from the National Customs Directorate (DNA).
If the reading is made on the placed volume, in January 16,514 tons were reached (considering all items) and compared to the same month of 2021, there was a 5% drop in whole milk powder, a 43% drop in skimmed milk powder, a 24% drop in the case of cheese and there was a 120% increase in butter.
Whole milk powder continues to be, by far, the most exported product: 11,924 tons in January, that is, 72.20% of the total shipped, generating income of US$ 43.2 million, 65.25% of the total obtained.
Revenue from whole milk powder grew 8%, skim milk powder decreased 39%, there was a drop of 11% in the case of cheese and butter improved 171%, always comparing the first month of 2022 with January of 2021.
In relation to the average prices achieved, based on the comparison of January 2022 and January 2021, improved 15% in whole milk powder, 7% in skim milk powder, 18% in cheese, and 23% in butter.
If the price received in January 2022 is compared to that of December 2021, improvements were also registered in all products: 3% in whole milk powder, 2% in skimmed milk powder, 7% in cheese and 2% in butter.
Finally, considering the most recent, that is, exclusively what happened with the businesses corresponding to January of this year, the average prices were:
- US$ 3,626 per ton of whole milk powder
- US$ 3,065 per ton of skimmed milk powder
- US$ 4,408 per ton of cheese
- US$ 4,459 per ton of butter
The destinations
The Inale report also revealed that considering the last 12 months (moving year) 25% of exported dairy products went to Algeria, 22% went to China, 19% to Brazil, 7% to Russia, 4% to Mexico and the rest (23%) to other markets.
Algeria was the main destination for whole milk powder (34% of the total shipped); Brazil for skimmed milk powder (42%) and cheeses (22%); and Russia for butter (56%).
