“The summer it is also ours. Enjoy it how, where and with whom you want. Today we toast to a summer for all, without stereotypes and without aesthetic violence against our bodies.
That is the message of the Ministry of Equality of Spain which, this Tuesday, launched a campaign that seeks to claim the diversity of female bodies and invites women to enjoy the summer.
The campaign is directed by the Women’s Institute, its slogan is «Summer is also ours» and it has a promotional poster in which there are five women with different types of bodies on the beach, one of them with a mastectomy.
«Diverse bodies, free of gender stereotypes, occupying all spaces. Summer also belongs to us. Free, equal and diverse,” Antonia Morillas, director of the Women’s Institute, wrote on Twitter.
The official believes that physical expectations not only affect women’s self-esteem, but also deny them their rights.
For her part, Irene Montero, minister of the Equality portfolio, highlighted on that social network that “all bodies are valid and we have the right to enjoy life as we are, without guilt or shame.”
“Summer is for everyone!” he said.
Ione Belarra, Minister of Social Services, also noted on Twitter that “all bodies are beach bodies. And mountain.
“Our bodies are to be cared for, respected and enjoyed.”
The campaign has generated different opinions. Some, for example, ask whether it should have been expanded to include men that do not have the so-called standard bodies.
Leftist leader Cayo Lara wrote on Twitter that it was “the height of absurdity. Trying to create a problem where it does not exist.
Ángela Rodríguez Pam, Secretary of State for Equality and against Gender Violence, posted a message on Twitter addressed to men who believe that women did not need the minister’s permission to go to the beach:
«Gentlemen saying that fat women could already go to the beach without permission from Equality. Of course we are going but assuming hatred for teaching a body that is not normative ».
