Algeria and Cuba create a commission to sign energy supply agreements

Algeria and Cuba constituted this Wednesday a joint coordination commission for the execution of projects in the field of hydrocarbons and supplies of petroleum products, as well as the construction of a power plant on the island.

The Algerian Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, received a high-level delegation from Cuba in Algiers, headed by the Vice Prime Minister, Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, who was accompanied by the Cuban Minister of Energy, Vicente de la O Levy.

The general director of the Algerian electricity company, Sonelgaz, which will be in charge of building the plant, also participated in the meeting, according to an official statement.

The meeting aimed make progress on the actions agreed in Novemberduring the official trip of the President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, to Algeria, who offered “a photovoltaic power plant as well as to restore the supply of hydrocarbons” to “reactivate the plants and combat the current power outages” on the Island.

Algiers and Havana have maintained close ties since the North African country achieved its independence in 1962 and will hold a bilateral meeting in Havana in early 2023

Cuba has been facing an energy crisis since last May that translates into frequent blackouts and was the main reason for the protests since August in various places on the island, such as Nuevitas or Havana. Added to the situation is the shortage of basic products (from food to fuel and medicines), high inflation and the partial dollarization of the economy.

During the visit of the Cuban president, his Algerian counterpart, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, highlighted the strengthening of solidarity “with a view to lifting economic and commercial relations and the financial burden” in Cuba.

He also announced the cancellation of outstanding interest on the Cuban debt and the postponement of its repayment “until further notice” to alleviate the economic impact suffered by the island after the pandemic.

Algiers and Havana have maintained close ties since the North African country achieved its independence in 1962 and will hold a high-level bilateral meeting in Havana in early 2023 in which a total of 150 Algerian businessmen are expected to participate.
