“I will not be a ‘dressed stick’: Fratti commits to acting.”

Alfredo Fratti will assume the position of Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries under the new government of Yamandú Orsi. During the presentation of his cabinet last Monday the 16th, Fratti expressed his commitment to not be a mere symbol within the administration, emphasizing his desire to be an active actor in ministerial management. “In all the places where I was I was never a ‘dressed stick’ and I plan not to be one now in the ministry,” he said.

Fratti’s appointment has generated reactions among the representatives of the agricultural unions. At the event, he was congratulated by various actors in the sector, who, in his words, know both his virtues and his defects. This aspect seems to indicate a desire to maintain a close and transparent relationship with agricultural representatives during his mandate.

Meeting of interests in agriculture

The new head of the agricultural portfolio recognized the importance of transition of the government. In this context, he mentioned that Alejandro Sánchez and Jorge Díaz are formally coordinating this process. He highlighted that the long-standing relationship he has with the current minister, Fernando Mattos, has facilitated the exchange of greetings and the opening of dialogues, which could benefit future management.

Fratti stressed the need for agricultural issues occupy a central place in the national agenda. “We are an agricultural country with an urban head,” he stated. With this comment, the new minister referred to the disconnection that often exists between the agroindustrial sector and the urban perception of society. He recognized that news from the sector does not receive the attention it deserves and attributed this to a lack of social interest, not to a decision by the media.

Reflections on the role of the media and society

When addressing the mediaFratti made an observation about the coverage that the agricultural sectors receive. “I spent 10 years on the livestock commission, perhaps three or four times a journalist was ‘prostrate’,” he commented, suggesting that the low coverage is a reflection of the general disinterest in agricultural issues. This raises questions about how the ministry could work to change this perception.

The future minister also made reference to the recommendations he has received from Jose Mujicaa key figure in his political career. Regarding this aspect, Fratti expressed: “let the way of being not change,” making it clear that his intention is to remain faithful to his essence. In addition, he reconfirmed that, although an admirer of the former president, his loyalty lies with the current leader, Yamandú Orsi.
