In the context of the recent election of Donald Trump as the next president of the United States, the Peruvian ambassador to that country, Alfredo Ferrerospoke on the chain Univision about the good level of the bilateral relationship and expectations in political and economic matters. “The bilateral relationship goes beyond the situation, which is the government in power,” he indicated.
What is your expectation and that of the president? Boluarte with the future government of donald trump?
For Peru, the relationship with the United States (USA) is very important, as for all Latin American countries. Peru already has a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that has been extremely successful. Between the two countries we have US$9.2 billion of American investment and we believe it should continue to grow. We have a bilateral exchange of US$23 billion, Peru is today the strategic center in South America because, as you know, the port of Chancay will soon be inaugurated and we hope to be able to increase American investment in our country.
Trump has talked about possible tariffs on products imported to the US. How do you think that could affect Peru economically?
We must first analyze what a campaign proposal is and what a government proposal is, we must see how that aspect is focused. Secondly, the Peru-US relationship. (…) indicates that our trade does not have flow problems, we basically export agricultural products, textiles and clothing and import technology, machinery and equipment; Therefore, we do not assume that in the case of bilateral action we should be affected by tariffs; It is a sensitive issue, we have to see what happens, but we are not calculating that it will impact us in the bilateral agreement.
What differences do you expect to see between the Trump governments and what Joe Biden’s has been like?
I am lucky to have been part of two governments at two different times, with Republicans and Democrats. When I was Minister of Foreign Trade I had to sign with President Bush, the relationship was very good and fluid. (…) Our relations with both parties have always been optimal, we have already met before the elections with several important representatives of the Republican Party. (…) Peru has to work with whoever is the president of the United States because the bilateral relationship goes beyond the situation, which is the government in power.
Biden is now expected to be part of the APEC summit.
The presence of the president of the United States is always important for a country like Peru and for the summit in general, which is made up of 21 leading economies that represent more than 60% of world trade. This is a forum that has been optimal for Peru, we have signed 10 FTAs with ten APEC economies, including the US and also China, which puts us back in the spotlight in South America and, of course, the port of Chancay turns Peru into a continental port hub, but it is not only Chinese investment, there is also American investment in the ports of Salaverry and Matarani. Peru is a country that has a very important port structure in view of what it will be like for Peru to be the great logistics hub of South America.
