Alfonso López Chau renounces the UNI rectory to apply for the presidency in 2026

Alfonso López Chau presented his irrevocable resignation to the position of Rector of the National University of Engineering (UNI) with the aim of initiating his electoral campaign for the presidential elections of 2026.

The decision was communicated through an office sent to the University Assembly on April 10 and will be effective on May 7.

In the document, López Chau thanked the university community and explained that his departure responds to a call to assume “superior responsibilities” in the political sphere.

“I have had the privilege of listening to the youngest, students and graduates of the House of Studies and other universities, who are full of proposals and solutions to the problems of Peru”he said.

The ex -rector is the founder of the party Now nationorganization registered in the Registration of Political Organizations (ROP) of the National Jury of Elections (JNE)so meet the requirements to participate in the next elections.

Sources from his group confirmed that his resignation is linked to the start of his presidential campaign, RPP reported.

In previous statements, López Chau has identified as a “center -left” figure and has mentioned that one of the axes of his proposal is the “moral recovery of the Presidency of the Republic.”
